Sir Son came home with two caterpillars from our neighbor’s yard.  These caterpillars, plus their brothers and sisters, ate her entire parsley plant.  She removed them to her Fennel plant, because she has an over abundance of fennel.  I’ll have to let her know that we’ll take some of the Fennel seeds when they arrive. 🙂

Anyhoo, here are the two caterpillars.  Sorry for the sorry photos, but it was all I could do.

When Sir Son taps them on the head, it really makes them mad. They send out these wonderful alien antennae and arch way back.  If those things to don’t scare you then the smell should. ewww….

These caterpillars should turn into a Black Swallowtail.

Sir Son has already caught a swallowtail, much like the Black Swallowtail. This one is called Palamedes Swallowtail. They are so pretty.

Updated morning of 4/6/09  to add:  The two caterpillars are now cocoons.  One is hanging from the side of the jar and is a bright green with yellow spots.  The other is hanging from a dead branch and it is greyish/brownish color like the branch.

  1. They were pretty caterpillars. Love the alien antennae! Good luck with the cocoons. 🙂

  2. LOL, your middle picture is cute.

  3. Loved the pictures. It is a bummer they ate all her parsley:( I saw caterpillars I saw in my front yard that acted like that the reared up when you scared them. They had black fuzz and red (feet?) though. You amaze me with your knowledge of creatures.

  4. Very neat. That was very kind of your neighbor to let Sir Son have 2 caterpillars.

  5. I can’t even tell you how much I miss butterfly watching in Florida. We get a few tiger swallowtails of the Western kind out here, but nothing like the butterflies of Florida. The caterpillars are alien creepy.
