Black Swallowtail Butterfly

Just over a week ago, our neighbor’s went on vacation.   While away they ask Sir Son to feed the pets, water the plants, etc.

These neighbor’s grow herbs and one of the herbs is Fennel.  We love fennel in our spaghetti, but we are not the only ones who love this fennel.  The caterpillars of the Black Swallowtail Butterflyadore this plant.  They have become a pest.  The neighbor’s  have started squashing the poor bugs.  eww….

While the neighbor’s are away, Sir Son helps control the pests on the fennel plant by bringing  six caterpillars in different sizes, home with him.  Each day Sir Son collects some of the fennel plant to feed the caterpillars.  If you think about it, we have now become the pest to the fennel plant. We also swim in the pool, when the neighbors are on vacation. 😉  I’d say we are lovable pests.    I was called The Pest by my best friend’s mother, for years.  I guess it was just natural that my children would become pests.

Back to the caterpillars.  The largest turns into a cocoon right away.

Here is an up close of the caterpillars. I know you wanted to see this. Yes, we keep them on our kitchen counter.

And now to watch them in action.

Aren’t they cute?

After 10 days one of God’s great miracles happen. It never ceases to amaze me. I just love it.

Several hours later, we let it go. It first landed on our porch, then took off for the nearest tree. 🙂

This is a male.  Hop over to Sunrise to Sunset and check out his wife to be.  We just need to find a way to get them together.  We’re sure they’ll like each other. 🙂

There are five more caterpillars to go and once they hatch they will be set free.   We will not pin them, so you can relax.  We’ll catch more and pin them later. 😀

  1. We had some in our parsley and we posted about that not long ago. I just can’t squish them either. I too became the pest and brought them indoors with some parsley.

  2. Very cool. We did that when *I* was a homeschooling kid…but the butterfly didn’t survive beyond hatching. We found it dead in it’s container. Obviously, I was crushed, and remember it in tears all these years later. :p

  3. That is cool! Last year the boys and I hatched Monarch butterflies….it is a really amazing process that God created.

  4. A friend of mine who is the first grade teacher at our church school gets caterpillars each spring to release as butterflys just before school closes for the summer in May.

    Ive never done this.

  5. Hop on over and check out my blog. We had Swallowtails too.

  6. Such a neat experience for kids-and adults : )

  7. So cool!
