Reading Event

Back in October Barnes and Noble hosted a homeschooling event where a local author came to talk about her book.  We had never been to one of these events, so decided to pile the girls into the van and see what it was all about.

The Mystery of the Missing Candlestick was written by June Weltman.  Quote from her site about the book, “When high school seniors Miranda Manning and her two friends drive to St. Augustine, Florida, it is just the beginning of a mystery that will take them into dark corners all over the historic city.”

While we were there Ms. Weltman talked about how she came up with the idea, how the cover was designed, and then read the first chapter.

All the kids were glued to what she was saying.

Afterwards she had each of the kids write a little mystery paragraph of their own and some of them read them aloud.  I was impressed with all of their writings.

Since the girls enjoyed the book and the writing assignment, they asked if I would buy them the book.  Of course, I said yes. 🙂

Ms. Weltman was kind enough to sign each book.

The Violinist finished reading the book by the time we got home.  The  other two took  a few more days.

The fun thing about this book, is the setting.  The characters visit St. Augustine to solve this mystery and they visit actual places in the old city.  Places we have been to ourselves.   So, after the girls read the book, we took a trip over to St. Augustine.  A post about that will show up on Monday. 🙂
